ONE of the oldest women in the UK has died aged 111.

Margaret Cooke, of Hedgerley Lane, in Beaconsfield was the third oldest person in Britain. She was born on September 15, 1900, when Queen Victoria was still on the throne and British troops were fighting in the Boer War in South Africa.

Mrs Cooke celebrated turning 111 in September last year with a special celebration.

Her son John, great, great grandson Eddie, and many other friends and family, including Bucks Fire and Rescue, climbed up a ladder to Mrs Cooke's bedroom window to deliver a bouquet of flowers as part of the celebrations.

Mrs Cooke has lived in Beaconsfield for most of her life. Her husband John Cooke was in the Royal Marines and died in 1960.

Mrs Cooke enjoyed watching snooker, darts and rugby on television and gave up smoking more than 50 years ago.

The oldest person in the UK, Grace Jones of Bermondsey, is just one year older than Mrs Cooke, having been born in 1899.

Mrs Cooke died on March 18.
