TBS students beat business leaders in quiz

STUDENTS from The Beaconsfield School have beaten a team of company directors in a quiz on health and safety at the British Safety Council.

The 15 and 16 year olds had been invited to take part in the quiz and the British Safety Council offices in London after the school became the first in South Bucks to complete a new course designed to improve knowledge of health and safety in the work place among young people.
The school fielded two teams from its year eleven pupils - a boys team and a girls team - but it was the girls who beat a selection of directors of British companies.
Sandra Stuart, learning resource administrator at The Beaconsfield School, who accompanied the pupils along with head teacher Nigel Dudding, said it had been a valuable experience.
She said: "The day gave our pupils a valuable insight into the workings of corporate events, with the pleasant surroundings, very organised programme, and buffet lunch."
Last year all year ten pupils undertook the course, Workplace Hazard Awareness, prior to going on a work experience placement. The school opted to do this because under 19 year olds are most at risk of accidents at work, with a young person seriously injured in a UK workplace every 40 minutes. In the last decade 66 under 19s have been killed at work. Because of the high success rate among pupils - 75 received certificates - the school is putting this year's year ten pupils on the course.
Test your knowledge of health and safety with our mini-quiz based on the course the students covered: 1. What three things do you need to start a fire? 2. What are the contents of a black labelled fire extinguisher? 3. Who in the workplace is responsible for health and safety? 4. What is the significance of a blue sign in the workplace. Answers: 1. Oxygen, fuel and heat. 2. CO2. 3. Both employer and employee. 4. The action requested is mandatory.

This article is to be published with a photograph of the students in The Advertiser on Thursday Jan 7.
