Show postponed by swine flu finally goes ahead this week
A SHOW that was postponed when the cast came down with swine flu before Christmas finally goes ahead this week.
Beaconsfield Theatre Group's production of Charley's Aunt will open on Wednesday at The Beacon Centre two months after it was originally due to take place.
The cast are thanking their lucky stars that they didn't reschedule to earlier in January when they would have had to cancel due to snow.
Charley's Aunt, a hilarious farce by Brandon Thomas first performed in 1892 is the origin of the phrase "a real Charley's aunt affair."
WC Penney was in the role of Lord Fancourt Babberly, masquerading as 'Charley's Aunt ' to allow his friends Charley Wykeham and Jack Chesney to entertain their young ladies, Amy Spettigue and Kitty Verdun. In 1892 a chaperone was an essential requirement and when the real aunt is delayed a substitute must be found quickly.
Chairman of Beaconsfield Theatre Group Helen Sharman said: "As with every farce the make-believe comes face-to-face with reality and leads to chaos and amusement. Who needs a pantomime when you have this delicious farce? We even have a dame."
The play runs until Saturday. To book, visit www.btg-theatre.org or telephone the box office on 07880 962514
