Libary to be expanded and renovated

Posted by Polly Manser on Jan 28, 10 12:09 AM in Local Authority

THE LIBRARY at Beaconsfield is to be expanded and its stock of books increased.

New equipment that will allow the public to scan in their own books when they return them will also be introduced, and the entire interior is to be re-decorated and re-carpeted.
Work is expected to start in a few weeks, as soon as Buckinghamshire County Council receives planning permission - likely to be simply a formality since this decision will be made by a different department within the same council.
Councillor Mike Colston, cabinet member for adults and families, said: "It is exciting, and it's nice as a cabinet member to be able to give some good news. The library will be modernised and brought up to date."
The extension will be small; essentially the entrance, which currently forms a recess, will be enlarged, making space for the reception to be moved and made smaller at the same time.
Mr Colston said that despite the huge importance of the internet, increasing numbers of people are using the county's larger libraries, thanks in part to increased activities being laid on in them.
Beacons field Library is next week launching a monthly evening book club to run alongside its existing monthly afternoon book club. At the first meeting, on Tuesday (Feb 2) from 6.15pm to 7.15pm, members will choose a selection of books, all of which will be available from the library.
The library runs a book club for teenagers, Imagine, on Saturday mornings at 10.30am. Younger children, from seven up, can have a chat, listen to a story and look at comics at a more informal book club, Chatter books, every second Thursday at 4.30pm. There are regular story sessions for under fives, called Monkey Bounce, with the next being held on Feb 5 at 10.00am.
In half term, there's a creative writing workshop on Feb 17 (booking essential), and a story time for grandparents and their grandchildren on Feb 18 at 2.15pm runs alongside a Book Doctor session on the same day from 2pm to 4pm at which staff will help parents to select reading material for their children.
