High School Muse: Imprisoned by the snow

hannah-stacey.jpgBear with me: my brain has been replaced with Christmas cake, writes Hannah Stacey of Beaconsfield High School.

It's been a while since my last blog, the time since then seems to have been filled with massive happenings and epic un-happenings, usually in the form of snow. However I'll do my best to fill you in.

Well, I visited my last potential university choice in Bournemouth, its obvious boast over Edinburgh simply being the climate! There is some serious competition there though in the course and the incredible amount of resources they have - for the moment I'll just say watch this space, I will be.

On that note though, my application to the Art Foundation course was finally sent. Now comes the slightly more strenuous task of putting together a portfolio, which may end in me dumping two years of work in front of my wonderful Head of Art, Ms Leisos, at some point and screaming 'HELP!' ... great start, I know.

But moving swiftly onwards, I'm sure our headteacher, Mr Johns, will be extremely disappointed to read that, due to the holiday, there isn't that much to report in this blog about school. But there was at least the House pantomime competition just as the first snowflakes were falling, and understandably my house won! It was a massive success despite the threat of being snowed in (horror!) and I think the best performance personally was seen in the Drama Technical crew, who made ten Pantomimes run smoothly that evening, I was knackered!

But then came snow. I adore the wonderfully English attitude towards snow, which is to look forward to it all year round so when we see the forecast we get excited and tell everyone 'It's Snow! The Snow is coming!' And yet when the snow comes? We scream 'Ah its cold! I'm not prepared for this, quick, buy more groceries than we could eat in a month and lets make fire!' I'm not going to lie, it makes me chuckle.

As for me though, I can not stand snow any more. I live in a valley miles away from all my friends, so for me snow is an imprisonment that slowly turns everyone in my house mad for a few days until, finally, that much prayed for thaw comes and I can hear all about the amazing fun everyone else has been having (including all the birthday parties I missed). Just brilliant.

So as I'm drawing towards the end of my blog I still have to try and cover Christmas, New Year's and the return to school (once again rendered impossible by the snow.) Well, Christmas was Christmas really. There were the presents, the bad jokes, the old movies, and awesome food for which we had been starving ourselves for so long that by lunchtime we practically inhaled the food as quickly as possible, with occasional grunts of satisfaction.

And likewise, New Year's was New Year's; the really good friends, the TV on at midnight to see the fireworks around the London Eye, pizza materialising from nowhere at around one in the morning, good times had by all really.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and I don't care that its too late to say it.

Hannah is a final year A level student who is hoping to gain a place at Edinburgh College of Art to study costume design. Through her blog Hannah shares her experiences as she prepares for her A levels, applies to universities, and waits for her results.

We'd like to hear from you.
