Comedy club to be trialled at Beacon Centre
IS BEACONSFIELD too genteel for stand up comedy? Two men setting up a comedy club in the town are about to find out.
Barnstormers - whose website warns "don't bring grandma unless she's broad minded" has - already set up fifteen 18-rated comedy venues across the South East.
Now The Beacon Centre in Holtspur could be about to join the likes of The Underground in Eastbourne and The Gulbenkian in Canterbury as a venue for new acts from the London circuit.
Entrepreneur Stephen Newberry, the business brain behind Barnstormers, will run a trial of three shows - targeting with posters the inhabitants of villages such as Wooburn Green and Flackwell Heath as well as in Beaconsfield - before deciding whether Beaconsfield is to become a permanent venue.
He said: "Our acts don't pull any punches, the material might be of a sexual nature. We say over 18s on our posters, and that's to put off people of 75 who are not going to get it. But in fact we don't mind 16 year olds coming along with their parents, it's up to the parents whether they can stand the embarrassment. "
He added: "It's not a stream of filth but it wouldn't be suitable for a ten year old."
All acts are viewed by Mr Newberry's business partner - he says they don't sleep together - Kevin Precious before they are hired and this, he said, means that "they are all really good." Some have appeared in Michael McIntyre's Roadshow, although the material for TV is been toned down, he said.
He said: "We hope we can get 30 people to our first show. Then through word of mouth we should get 50 to the second and 70 to the third. If that happens then we know the numbers will build up."
At the first show, on February 6, compere Kevin McCarthy introduces riotous Phil Butler, of whom The Guardian has called: "without doubt one of the most exciting and original finds in comedy in recent years", alog with Steve Day, whom The Scotsman has said is "warm, funny, frank and thought-provoking" and Stan Stanley who has "timing Accurist would be proud of, " according to Chortle.

Well, if it is, we'll have to ask Rabbi Lionel Blue along to do a standup routine...
On the other hand it may be a bit too genteel, don't you think?
Are you SURE you mean 'gentile?
"Geteel", really? Oh please...
Hands up, yep, I spelt it incorrectly. Duh! Whizzed through my too fast with my spell check. See you at the comedy club Motco - if you're not too genteel for it that is.
