High School Muse: Hannah hates the London College of Fashion
A blog Hannah Stacey of Beaconsfield High School
Brace yourselves for another rally of angsts, embarrassments and wiff waff, hello again!
Christmas is coming now to my surprise - along with the age-old conundrum of who out of those close to me should I really spend money on and who can I plead poverty to in order to afford that particular pair of party heels I want so much?
And, inevitably, along with Christmas comes the School House Pantomime! As usual I am thoroughly over excited about the whole thing, although I fear the Prefect Heads of Houses whose job it is to write, cast and direct the entire performance are somewhat less enthusiastic. But backstage theatre is where I dream of spending my future career and as the lights are coming out and the costumes are unpacked I feel that wonderful sense of excitement shared alike from little girls with their new Barbies to grown men with their new gadgets and binned instructions, I love it!
As well as that, and somewhat more seriously, I am increasingly finding the talk around me is turning to Universities; this person's application has been sent off, that person has an interview, and that person over there even has an offer of a place already! I haven't even finished my application yet! (I probably shouldn't have admitted that)
But to be fair, I am only applying to a degree course next year, and two weeks ago I went to London College of Fashion's open day where, to the horror of all my Art and Textiles class mates, I hated it! To give it its due, it was incredibly impressive and the work it produced was stunning but truthfully, it wasn't Edinburgh! It was cold, arrogant and the people there obviously expected you to love it, something I have always hated (understandably, I think!). It felt like an unemotional production line of excellence, and unfortunately my ego would rather not be part of a production line thank you very much, however nice the outcome. But for every other fashion and costume enthusiast out there, do not let me discourage you, LCF is still one of if not the best Textile Colleges out there, and everyone I know has scolded me for disliking it, so there you go, everyone is different.
Other than school news, I am glad to say I feel like my life is complete; as a wonderfully late birthday treat as I watched the brilliant comedian Dylan Moran live in London recently, (for those of you out there who do not know his genius, I beseech you to watch the programme Black Books). For two hours, my sister Joy, Georgie Barwick (whose culinary skills I have mentioned in a previous blog) and myself were in stitches as Dylan Moran ranted at us about relationships, chocolate, and curtains. Now, however, I am ashamed to admit that I have acquired that girlish supersonic squeal that used to annoy me so much; whenever I see a picture of him, hear his name or see anything that might refer to him I shriek, but it was worth it.
Despite the comic genius, the evening was not all fun and games due to my fatal underestimation of my sister's sense of humour. Never before did I think I would ever have the need to shout out across an entire restaurant that I was not pregnant, but then again, I never banked on Joy asking the live D.J at Planet Hollywood to shout out that I was. Cringe.
Hannah is a final year A level student who is hoping to gain a place at Edinburgh College of Art to study costume design. Through her blog Hannah shares her experiences as she prepares for her A levels, applies to universities, and waits for her results.
