High School Muse: Hannah visits Edinburgh College of Art

A blog by Hannah Stacey of Beaconsfield High School

Half Term has somehow managed to have both just started and just finished! I'm vaguely confused as to where it went but I feel the answer lies in the truckloads of coursework that I thankfully did have a few days break from by being a map-buried tourist Edinburgh, looking at the College of Art's Open Day.

Let's just say that if I could write "I love it, I love it, I love it!" over and over again for the rest of the blog while hypothetically jumping up and down, believe me I would, but that isn't very interesting to read so I can't.

I waaaant to go!! The city is incredible, filled with an infinite amount of antique book shops, pubs and tartan tourist shops and even several beautiful parks that jump out and surprise you the moment you think you're in a city. One brilliant quirk I passed several times were costume shops that had to employ bouncers in the build up to Halloween as queues of never ending students waited expectantly for their plastic horns and broomsticks. Even when I was playing the part of the early bird and was passing these stores an hour before they even opened I actually have photographic evidence of crowds of students sitting outside it, patiently waiting for the doors to open! Just in case you haven't picked it up by now, I really want to go, but I am now terrified that I don't have a chance of getting in as it turns out there will probably be about 6 places on the costume course that I could even apply to!

Two more things worth mentioning, I have promised faithfully to Rosa Standish, our school's Head of Environment, to correct my abominable mistake from the last blog. I insinuated that the endangered species of school pond newts were spotty whereas they are in fact Great Crested Newts. My apologies Rosa. Also our indomitable Head Girl, Lauren Rutter, surpassed herself once again by single handedly organised eight other local schools and about five or six brilliant speakers to attend her own creation, a Prefect Conference. Despite, I must admit, a few quiet worries that no one would take it seriously, it was a really successful day, with students providing each other with ideas and solutions to take back to their own schools and a fantastic free lunch from our beloved Roger and his canteen staff.

In addition to this I can report sudden emergency school tours for parents, and the climax of the BIG deadline day in my year for sending off personal statements for University applications was the builders accidentally causing a power cut. The rest of the school loved it however; as it was in the last few hours before Half Term began, so it gave everyone a wonderful excuse to play games all afternoon if they so wanted, though, of course, they never dreamt of playing and stuck to their books until 3.30, of course.

So, as usual I have run out of room and regretfully I am once more wishing you farewell. Before I go though, there is a miniature rant I would like to get off my chest about two things: 1. I know Halloween is over now but why was everyone wishing me 'Happy Halloween' a week ago?? 2. Why were the Christmas decorations put up before Halloween? And you know, if this makes me a boring old fart, then so be it, but I am beginning to feel there are more boring old farts out there who feel, like me, that Halloween should be scary and Christmas should be in December - maybe I should start a boring old fart revolution against the weirdness of advertising... then again maybe not.

'Till the next blog, dear readers, arrivederci.

Hannah is a final year A level student who is hoping to gain a place at Edinburgh College of Art to study costume design. Through her blog Hannah shares her experiences as she prepares for her A levels, applies to universities, and waits for her results.

We'd like to hear from you.

Lets should be let's and 'I love it I love it I love it' should be " I love it, I love it, I love it!"
Also, do pupils really addres staff by their first names like Rosa and Roger instead of Ms Standish and Mr(Surname)
Is this really written by a pupil in the sixth form of one of our Grammar schools? Yikes!

For the benefit of 'Curiouser and curiouser', and there comments of 8/11/09:

Almost as appallingly spelt as you have the word 'address' eh? Look on the bright side....if she wrote on behalf of the local Comprehensive, it would have been in the unintelligible " Txt spk dat we az gt 2 kno an luv innit"

A word to the wise....Glass Houses and Stones.

Ah GOODNIGHT!!

3) 'Till the next blog,.... 'til

Apart from those minor errors, your UK-English enabled Spellchecker seems to be functioning correctly....magnificent!!

For goodness sake! Hannah is only 18 and she's doing a fantastic job for the Bucks Ad, for her school, and for her future career prospects with this blog. She will go far. She won't spend her life looking for mistakes on other people's blogs.

Hannah these blogs are awesome - I only found out yesterday that you were writing them ! Interesting to find out about all of the stress of Uni applications and personal statements, as it gives me a great insight as to what to expect next year! Thanks for sharing your experiences, and hope you get into Edinburgh if that's where you're hoping to go judging by this blog !
