Theatre, zip wire, cycle lanes and more: town's five year plan

A YOUTH shelter, playground zip wire, cycle lanes and a town website are among the proposals put forward in a new five year plan for Beaconsfield and Holtspur.

The strategic plan, created by Beaconsfield Town Council after public consultation, calls on Buckinghamshire County Council to pursue plans to build a by pass to the East of the town.
It also includes ambitious plans for the town hall which could see it knocked down and redeveloped.
Beaconsfield Mayor, Ken Brown, said: "The plan is what we are aiming to do over a five year period, some of it we can achieve and some of it we won't be able to."
Improved youth facilities could include a zip wire at Holtspur Recreation Ground for nine to 14 year olds, and a youth shelter which Cllr Brown would like to see constructed next to the Curzon Centre in Maxwell Road.
A youth theatre is also mentioned in the plan, but has yet to be discussed, Cllr Brown said.
Cycle lanes running between the New Town and the Old Town and to the schools are also proposed.
Cllr Brown said: "We must encourage people, especially children to cycle. It's good exercise and it keeps cars off the road. It also gives children independence."
Plans for a town website are advanced, with discussions currently taking place with an company which may be employed to design and run it.
The site will serve as a town guide, with links to schools and community groups. Minutes of council meetings will also be published.
The town council believes a relief road is needed from the Pyebush roundabout to the A355 near Maxwell Road to reduce congestion in the Old Town, Cllr Brown said.
However it is unlikely to happen by 2014 - and can only probably only happen if the Ministry of Defence sells its land at the Defence School of Languages, as it has said it may, and if Buckinghamshire County Council can be persuaded that it is necessary, Cllr Brown said.
The strategic plan for 2009 to 2014 can be viewed at Beaconsfield Town Hall.
