School bus crashes after diabetic driver loses control
A SCHOOL coach crashed in Beaconsfield on Thursday after the diabetic driver lost control of the vehicle.
The Simmonds coach had picked up girls from Beaconsfield High School and was in London End when it veered to the left and hit an empty parked Saab at 3.53pm.
The coach came to a halt and pupils were escorted off it by sixth formers on board and by a passing motorist who stopped to help.
The children were taken back to school by sixth formers and were eventually taken home in another coach.
Danny Donovan of Thames Valley Police said today that police found the driver "was drifting and out of consciousness with slurred speech."
An ambulance was called and he was found to be a diabetic in need of medication and was treated on the spot without needed to go to hospital, Mr Donovan said.
Nobody was either injured or arrested.
The coach came to a halt with the engine still running and the driver slouched over the wheel half conscious, according to a witness.
Alan Walters from Beaconsfield, who happened to be following the coach in a car, saw the accident happen and pulled over to assist.
He said: "The driver was obviously not well, he was slumped over the wheel semi conscious, and all I wanted to do was get him to turn the engine off."
The Advertiser contacted Simmonds this morning but the company has not responded today.
