Elderly diabetic driver who crashed school coach to lose job

THE ELDERLY diabetic driver of a school coach which crashed in Beaconsfield on Thursday last week is to lose his job.

Driver Peter Mosdell had picked up pupils from The Beaconsfield School for coach company Simmonds and was in London End when he veered left and hit a parked Saab at 3.55pm.
The coach stopped and pupils were escorted off it by sixth formers on board and by a member of the public with the engine still running and Mr Mosdell slumped over the steering wheel.
Owner of Iver based Simmonds, Ian Curtain, said he would no longer be employing Mr Mosdell who is in his "early 70s."
He said: "He is a lovely man but he won't be driving coaches anymore."
He denied he was wrong to allow a diabetic in his 70s drive a school coach.
He said: "He's got type II diabetes and he's perfectly entitled to drive. He has to take a medical every year to retain his PCB licence." He added: "Just because people are 70 doesn't mean they are past it."
Mr Mosdell has the less serious serious type of diabetes and has always treated himself successfully with tablets until now, he said.
His blood sugar level had dropped for some reason on Thursday and he spent two days in hospital following the accident, he said.
He said: "The ambulance man said he thought he hadn't taken care of himself with his food. "
He added: "I've been in this business for 34 years and not a single person has been injured in or by any of my vehicles."
He said the company, whose website is advertising "multiple vacancies" for drivers, employs one other driver over 70 who is "fit as a fiddle."
Nobody was either injured or arrested.
Owain Johns, head of Beaconsfield High School, said: "This is the first incident in a long time and thankfully there were no injuries. We will be working with the county council to ensure that all drivers are fit and able and safe."Polly Manser
