Profile of Caroline Tailor, new police sergeant for Beaconsfield
A WOMAN who fulfilled a life long dream by joining the police force after her children grew up is the new Sergeant responsible for Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, Hedgerley, Fulmer and Denham.
Sergeant Caroline Tailor, 40, took up her post ten days ago replacing Sergeant Steve Bobbett.
She will work out of Beaconsfield police station leading a team of four PCs and eight PCSOs.
Her appointment means that both the inspector and the sergeant responsible for the area are now women, following the recent appointment of Inspector Bhupinder Rai a month ago, responsible for neighbourhood policing across South Bucks.
Sgt Tailor, who lives near Henley, previously worked for two years as a neighbourhood specialist officer at Iver, and joined the police less than four years ago.
Her husband's job in the RAF means that he is away for months at a time - he has served in Iraq and is due to be posted to Afghanistan - and so while her children were young she "put the family first" in terms of her career, working part time.
She worked for several years as an operations and facilities manager for a FTSE 100 company looking after issues such as planning, health and safety, IT and human resources.
Sgt Tailor said: "This is the fulfilment of a dream, I've wanted to be a police officer since I was young. I also saw the community my children were growing up in and I wanted to make a difference to it."
She is working longer hours than before, and says the shift pattern was "a huge shock to the system, but that the job is hugely rewarding.
She said: "I've found complete job satisfaction. Some people can go through 20 jobs before they find it.
"I was 36 when I joined. A lot of people think they can't make a change like that when they're pushing 40 and it can take a lot of guts to do. It has been a huge challenge, but I would say to anybody who is thinking of joining Thames Valley Police at that age, or any age, go for it, because the rewards can be endless."
There isn't much spare time, she said, but when she's at home she enjoys walking her dog (she also has three cats) and making greetings cards (which she sells) and keeping in touch with her children who are at university.
Sgt Tailor acknowledged criticism in the community that Beaconsfield Police Station has been understaffed during much of 2009, with a high turnover of senior officers and her predecessor in post for less than a year.
However Beaconsfield neighbourhood team is back to full strength with the appointment of PCSO Denise Hawkes this month and the return of PCSO Vijay Desai following a long absence due to a knee injury.
She said: "There has been change at the sergeant level, yes, but police officers Ian Barnett and Iain Torbett have been based at Beaconsfield station for a number of years. PCSO Deborah Bahan has been working within the community for four years. This continuity of service is a valuable to the town."
Gerrards Cross is policed by PC Claire Woodcock supported by PCSOs Matt Bingham, Ceri Paul and new addition Samir Khan. Denham is policed by PC Marcus Audoin supported by PCSOs Paul Dobbin and Sarah Puksis.
Currently, Sgt Tailor is getting to know the area she'll be policing and key people she'll need to be working with.
Although on the surface this area would appear very different to some others in South Bucks, Sgt Tailor said that evidence from community consultation by the police and neighbourhood action groups shows that people are concerned about similar issues; anti social behaviour, speeding and burglary, she said.
She said: "I truly believe in the ethos of neighbourhood policing and I'm looking forward very much to working within the community here."
