Model village celebrates 80th annivesary
VISITORS from near and far flocked to Bekonscot Model Village in Beaconsfield to join its 80th anniversary celebrations.
More than 1,500 people crammed into Beaconsfield's biggest tourist attraction, the oldest model village in the world.
Among them was season ticket holder Nicky Wood, from Asserton Road, Beaconsfield, who has visited Bekonscot at least once a month since her two sons, Connor, five and Ethan, three, were tiny.
She said: "It has been a lovely lovely day, so nice that it's almost brought a tear to my eye. It's been very nostalgic, and so nice to see people from all over the world here."
Attractions included a 111 year old carousel, falconry display, brass band, and traditional side shows such as a coconut shy.
After the public had gone on Wednesday, the 25 staff celebrated with a fish and chip supper and some drinks, leaving the clearing up until the following day.
Manager Brian Newman-Smith said: "It was a brilliant day."
In 1929 wealthy London accountant Roland Callingham, who lived in Ledborough Road, first invited the public into the back garden of his home on a Sunday afternoon to view a model village he was creating and the largest outdoor train set in England. He had hoped to raise some money for charity.
His guests loved it and the village which Mr Callingham later named Bekonscot was on its way to becoming the worldwide attraction that it is today
