Beaconsfield mayor reacts to high speed rail news
THE MAYOR of Beaconsfield has said it would be "disastrous" if a high speed rail line were to be built through Beaconsfield.
Councillor Ken Brown said Beaconsfield Town Council would protect the interests of the residents.
He said: "It is too early to make any direct judgement ... without knowing the full detail of the proposal, the exact route to be taken.
"But you can rest assured that the interests of Beaconsfield will be protected and any adverse plans or decisions will be vigorously challenged."
He added: "This is a highly thought of, fast and efficient railway network. To include it in a high-speed rail link would be disastrous for the passengers who live in Buckinghamshire."
Peter Chapman, vice chairman of Gerrards Cross Parish Council, said he doubted that the Chiltern Line would be used for high speed rail in South Bucks.
He said: "I think it's unlikely to be tangled up with commuter lines because the purpose of the high speeed rail would be for people who currently fly, and if it's not fast enough it won't meet that objective."
He added: "This will not get approval through the planning process like Tesco or the motorway service station, it will require a bill or an act of Parliament, and the role of our MP is going to be crucial."
