Joy after Candlemas Mead planning rejection
People living in and near Candlemas Mead are jubilant after a developer was told that it cannot build a row of houses on land they use for parking.
Neil Poulter, a metal worker from The Mead, spoke on behalf of 70 residents in those streets and in Waller Road and Fenhurst Close at a planning meeting of South Bucks District Council on Wednesday last week. (March 11)
He told councillors that if they allowed developer L&Q to build four terraced houses on land that is currently a car park for up to 20 cars, parking problems that are already terrible in the narrow streets would become even worse, with only 22 parking spaces remaining for 45 flats in the road.
The debate centred around how much residents currently use the car park, with Frank Reynolds of L&Q accusing the residents of placing extra cars there in advance of a site visit by councillors, a charge which Mr Poulter denied.
Councillor Alan Walters said: "When I went there at 6.30am on Saturday there were 20 cars, and on three other occasions there were upwards of 12 cars. The developers are suggesting that people park in Fernhurst Close, but that wouldn't be safe. It's 300m from the site and who's going to walk that far?"
Councillors agreed with him and they refused planning permission by eight votes to two on the grounds that these plans were almost identical to plans previously submitted by the developer, which were refused in September.
Mr Poulter said afterwards: "I'm very pleased. I'm representing young families, elderly and disabled people and this is a good result for all of them. But I am bracing myself for an appeal by the developers."
