Appeal for more council visitors

Posted by Greg Burns on Jan 31, 09 01:47 PM in Beaconsfield News

The public is being encouraged to drop in to council meetings at Beaconsfield Town Hall and witness democracy taking place.
People hardly ever come to see what Beaconsfield Town Council's councillors - all Conservative or Independents - are discussing in their name, according to Councillor Deborah Sanders.
Cllr Sanders, an Independent, said: "I'm not sure if elected councillors should feel honoured that the public trust them, or disillusioned because people have little interest in council proceedings.

"Apart from the incinerator issue last year, people haven't come along except to object to planning applications. I'd love to see a guide pack coming in, or some young people coming in, to witness democracy.
"As long as people are quiet and respectful they don't have to stay for the whole meeting, they can slip in for an hour and slip out again."
She added: "You voted for us, you have a right to see what we do. There's a need for good town councillors, and there's only two years before the next elections, so people should be taking a look at what we're doing now."
Discussions by some committees, such as the open spaces committee which deals with recreation grounds, have not been visited by a single member of the public, she said.
Meetings take place twice a month on Thursdays at 7.45pm in the town hall, Station Road, New Town. You can find out more by looking at notice boards on the town green in the New Town, at the top of Station Road in the New Town, and at Holtspur Post Office, or by contacting Cllr Sanders on 01494 674 634.
