Holtspur late night store plans shelved
People living near Holtspur Parade have expressed relief after a Slough business man abandoned plans to open a late night convenience store and off-licence.
Gurcharan Kataria withdrew his application to sell alcohol at a new store in the parade, on Holtspur Top Lane, and to remain open until 11.30pm, the day before it was due to go before South Bucks District Council (SBDC) on Monday.
He told the Advertiser he had been "shocked" by the level of complaints about his plans to open a shop on a site which has been empty for 18 months since Laithwaites moved to Gregories Road, Beaconsfield.
He said: "I've got six shops in Slough, all of them open late, and I've never had any complaints from residents. One of the people who wrote in was an 80 year old lady and she would have been well asleep in the evenings. I'm not going to bother with it now, it's not a very good location anyway."
Carole Smalley, of Holtspur Top Lane, said: "I'm delighted. We already have a shop and an off-licence in Mayflower Way. We were worried about the late night hours. This is a residential area and we don't want people coming and going, even if it's only to buy groceries. It wouldn't be very pleasant for people who live nearby."
Dawn Stone of Holtspur Top Lane agreed. She said: "The Esso on the A40 is open 24 hours a day so all our late night needs are catered for already."
She said what the area really needed was a grocers or a chemist.
Twenty five residents wrote to SBDC to object to the licence application which included staying open until 12.30pm on public holidays.
Councillor Alan Walters of Beaconsfield Town Council, which also objected to the application, said: "It could have lead to anti-social behaviour, which the police have worked so hard to reduce in Holtspur, with some success. The hours were excessive. Personally, I wouldn't have objected if they had wanted to close at 10.30pm."
