Volunteers ensure news is Bucks spreads

Bex-Talking-Newspaper-2.jpgFor the past 25 years, blind people in Buckinghamshire have been able to keep up to date with the latest issues of the Advertiser thanks to the efforts of a team of volunteers.
Every Thursday, as soon as the Advertiser comes out, for Rosemary Segrove and her team of volunteers, the process of committing the week's news to tape so that the blind can listen to it begins.

Each week the team picks a selection of articles from the Buckinghamshire and Beaconsfield Advertisers to record to tapes, which are then copied and shipped to the Post Office, so that the tapes are received by the people who require them the following day.
The Beaconsfield Talking Newspaper, which is recorded at Rosemary's house in Stratton Way, Beaconsfield, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this November, having started up in 1983.
"It is hard work but it is very rewarding," said Rosemary. "I have a fantastic team who work with me and everyone is very committed to getting the tapes out on time. The Post Office knows us and what we do and they always wait for us to give them the tapes before they set out.
"I started doing this having done some work for a blind charity. I was asked if I would be interested in doing this and I said yes, and 25 years later I'm still doing it!"
The service currently has 42 volunteers working for it, the majority of whom have been helping to record the tapes for more than 10 years.
Ron Erlich, who at two years is one of the more recent additions to the team, said: "It is strange but I have found that people recognise my voice because of recording the paper. There have been times when I have been in the shops and people have overheard me talking and said that they know the voice from hearing it on the tapes."
Rosemary added: "I'm so grateful to all the volunteers that have helped me now and in the past. Without them, the talking newspaper would not be possible."

We'd like to hear from you.
