Cheryl Gillan MP visits Quaker House in Beaconsfield
Chesham and Amersham MP Cheryl Gillan paid a visit to the newly restored Jordans Quaker Meeting House today to see its recovery from the fire that almost destroyed it three years ago.
In March 2005, the 320-year-old building was badly damaged by fire and since then, work has been carried out to restore the historic site to its former glory.
As well as being restored, improvements have also been carried out, with better classroom facilities and disabled access added.
On Friday the nearly completed site was opened for the first time since the fire, and Mrs Gillan went along to see the progress that had been made.
She said: "I am hugely impressed by what has been achieved here. The fire was absolutely devastating and the future looked very bleak. The work that has been carried out is fantastic and stands as a testament to all involved.
"The Quaker Meeting House is one of the most important historical buildings in Buckinghamshire so I am very pleased that it has been saved and restored to how it looked before. It is really a huge accomplishment."
The cost of the insurance covered the restoration but the money needed for the improvements came to nearly £500,000, which has been raised after a public appeal for funds.
Mrs Gillan added: "It is very pleasing that, not only has the site been restored, it is now at a better standard than it was before the fire. The people here have really taken advantage of the opportunity to make the house even better than it was before."
The meeting house was built in 1688 and William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, USA, is buried in its grounds along with members of his family. It was one of the first Quaker Meeting Houses to be built in the UK and will officially be opened in mid-August.
